Telecommunications and Media Industry

Communications companies are under intense pressure to keep operating costs such as customer service low, while growing customer share, improving customer retention and increasing revenues with new service expansions. To meet these challenges, telecom companies are increasing their investments in CRM strategies and software.

A study from telecom market research and consulting firm Dittberner Associates forecasts resurgent growth in the market for CRM and related customer service software solutions. The research report titled, Telecom Customer Assurance & Analytics, estimates the telecom industry software market at $997 million in 2005 and projects growth to $1.3 billion in 2010. The Dittberner report cites the complexity of product pricing, promoting, and personalizing next generation telecom services as the main impetus for telcos to pay greater attention to CRM processes and automation software.

“If we’ve learned anything from the telecom industry’s last recession, it’s that investing in the latest network innovations is no guarantee of business success”, says Dan Baker, director of Dittberner’s OSS/BSS KnowledgeBase. “That’s why, in today’s competitive world, investments in customer-keeping and customer-monetizing technology are as vital as a telcos’ investments in network infrastructure.”

The telecom industry has experienced greater fluctuation with regard to customer relations that possibly any other. When telecom was a monopoly industry, customer care was far from a critical success factor. Monopoly (or oligopoly) telecom companies cared more about their delivery networks than achieving a positive customer experience with captive customers. However, in 1984 when AT&T was declared an illegal monopoly by the US government and split apart, the industry was forced to change. The wireless industry was born, new technologies such as CTI (computer telephony integration), IVR (interactive voice response) and real-time bill inquiry appeared, and customer care made a comeback as a requisite process to survive and thrive. While the telecom industry experienced a decline with the dot com bubble at the turn of the century, since the 2003 U.S. economic upswing, communication service providers (CSPs) have again increased their CRM software investments in order to grow customer wallet share and converge services such as triple and quadruple play.

CRM software systems help telecom operators manage and control the single most concernthat faces them in the light of increased competition – customer turnover. Customer analytics has become a boom for telcos and is now a standard part of CRM applications such as Customer Service Management, Call Center Support and Sales Force Automation (SFA). CRM solutions for the telecom industry equip telcos with competitive advantage by providing the tools to identify and retain profitable customers.

In a Telecom environment, CRM software plays additional, specialized roles beyond the traditional account, contact and activity management. Telecom CRM systems help manage customer churn by analyzing data collected from other touch-points across functional areas like sales and service. When integrated with transactional data like usage and call patterns, analysis reveals rich insights and intelligence into customer behavior and helps identify and mitigate customer churn.

An increased number of competitors, higher consumer expectations, fast and frequent consumer switching from one supplier to another and a high dependence on economic conditions have converged to result in an increasingly challenging telecom market.

Unlike most other industries, CRM systems in the communications industry battle with established billing vendors for market share. CRM software criteria particularly useful in the communications and media industry include flexible up-sell and cross-sell support, sophisticated multiple party relationship controls, support for sale opportunities over multiple periods (often based on a subscription type agreement), close CRM integration with the sale order fulfillment process, integration with Web 2.0 and social media tools and built-in or integration with content management systems. CRM systems should further empower CSPs to migrate from costly sales and service channels such as call centers to more cost-effective channels such as self service, email, and interactive voice response (IVR) systems.

Leading CRM software solutions in the telecom industry include the following:

Amdocs and Siebel hold the top market share leadership position.

SAP, Aspect and Oracle are the second tier challengers.

Avaya, Witness Systems, Genesys Telecommunications, Onyx and Unica round up the third tier.

SQL> select name from names;
NAME
——————-
Mehmet Yavas
mehmet yavas
MEHMET YAVAS

SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY;
Session altered.
SQL> select name from names where name = ‘Mehmet Yavas’;
NAME
————————————————————–
Mehmet Yavas

NLS_SORT parametresinin değerinini bu sefer sonuna _CI (Case Insensetive) getirerek değiştirdim. Eşitliklerde görüldüğü üzere problem yok.

SQL> alter session set NLS_COMP=ANSI;
Session altered.
SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY_CI;
Session altered.
SQL> select name from names where name = ‘Mehmet Yavas’;
NAME
——————————————————————–
Mehmet Yavas
mehmet yavas
MEHMET YAVAS

NLS_SORT parametresini tekrar eski haline alıp BINARY yaptım. LIKE parametresi case sensetive çalıştı.

SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY;
Session altered.
SQL> select name from names where name like ‘Mehmet%’;
NAME
————————————————————
Mehmet Yavas

NLS_SORT parametresini eşitlikte çalışmış olduğu şekli ile tekrar düzenletim fakat like sorgularında durum yine aynı. Soruguda görüldüğü üzere like case sensetive çalıştı.

SQL> alter session set NLS_COMP=ANSI;
Session altered.
SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY_CI;
Session altered.
SQL> select name from names where name like ‘Mehmet%’;
NAME
————————————————————
Mehmet Yavas

10gR2 sürümü ve sonraki sürümlerinde NLS_COMP parametresine getirilen ‘LINGUISTIC’ değeri ile tüm eştitlik, sıralama işlemlerinin yanında benzerlik(LIKE) sorgularıda case insensetive çalışacaktır.

SQL> alter session set NLS_SORT=BINARY_CI;
Session altered.
SQL> alter session set NLS_COMP=LINGUISTIC;
Session altered.
SQL> select name from names where name = ‘Mehmet Yavas’;
NAME

Oracle Provider For Ole DB

> rundll32.exe “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\oledb32.dll”,OpenDSLFile C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\test.udl

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html adresinden Oracle 11g Release 2 ODAC 11.2.0.1.2 with Xcopy Deployment paketini indirip masaüstünüze açın.

For this reason the original founding group of carriers of ITW have decided to regroup in a council of the founders and help to make sure ITW’s important contribution to the industry is perennial. Alexandre Pébereau, Executive Vice President, International Carriers, ORANGE has been elected chairman of the Founders Council.
ITW is a unique opportunity for carriers to review together once a year advances in telecommunications that afford opportunities to better meet the demands of the marketplace.
As a first demonstration of that common will, and to improve the venue for the event, the founders’ council and the carriers it represents is pleased to formally announce that ITW 2012 will be held in the city of Chicago, and organized again by their event host, TelCap.
The event will have a new location in 2012 but the founding principles of ITW remain the same. The event is the world’s carrier meeting, allowing space for bilateral meetings at tables and in meeting suites, but also including content-oriented sessions proposed by the founding members that will focus on market developments shaping the industry’s future. The principles of allowing a level playing field for carriers to come together in a cost effective and efficient meeting place will be fundamental to the event in Chicago.
Wholesalers are playing a major role in the telecom ecosystem
Voice business is a highly strategic business for carriers. In 2010, the global voice market was estimated to be 413 billion minutes, with an annual growth rate of 4% (*). This growth is being driven by the economic development of areas with high geographical density (South-East Asia, China and India), evolution in mobile telephony and the rise of Voice over IP. The increasing demand for data and bandwidth is also very high, especially in emerging countries.
The importance of international wholesalers is growing along with their capacity to better answer the general and specific needs of retail operators. International Carriers have the capabilities to manage high volumes of traffic, they have the technical and commercial know-how to respond to ever changing market needs and to introduce advanced solutions driven by the IP technology, becoming more and more predominant (*).
IP is at the centre of tomorrow’s world.
In the global market, IP is at the centre of operators’ growth strategy to deliver on their promise of bringing advanced end-to-end solutions and real value to users: consistent high quality, reliability and simplicity. Facing an increasing demand for connectivity, growth is also achieved through a successful migration to IP. To seize this business opportunity, the largest international wholesalers are consistently migrating their business to IP in order to soon offer new enriched communication services. As a result VoIP traffic accounted for over one quarter of the total voice traffic in 2010 (*).
Competition in the IP markets is very strong, and business models are evolving quickly with the entry of new players from the Internet world. The wholesale players are themselves evolving towards becoming not only carriers of traffic but enablers, in this rich communication world, developing the needed infrastructure and technologies. As a result, they will continue to offer the level of quality that makes a difference and create value for their end-customers, shareholders and fellow carriers.
Innovation and collaboration will be at the heart of the IP transition. ITW continues to provide an essential opportunity for carriers and new players to share their perspectives as we move together into a new era in global telecommunications.
ITW 2012 will take place at the Hyatt Regency Chicago from 14 – 16 May 2012.

Speak Clearly When Using the Phonetic Alphabet

When talking to someone over the radio, it is important to enunciate. Each word should be clear and distinct from the next one. Also, remember to maintain an even rate of speech.

The ICAO recommends not exceeding 100 words per minute. If someone needs to write down or record what the speaker is saying, it is important to slow the rate of speech even more, so the listener has time to write everything down correctly.

Volume and Knowing How to Work Equipment

When speaking over a radio system, the speaker should make sure to be speaking loud enough and be aware of keeping her volume at a constant level. Being familiar with the equipment used is also an important facto because the speaker needs to knows how close to be to the microphone to be heard well. If a speaker is not close enough or too far away from the microphone, it can affect the ability of the listener to understand what is being said.

Different from the International Phonetic Alphabet

Sometimes this alphabet is confused with the International Phonetic Alphabet, but the latter is a globally accepted list of terms for how to sound out and pronounce words. This is different from the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, which provides a word for each letter in the alphabet so that it will be clear which letter a person is speaking. For tips on how to memorize this alphabet, click here.

Remember to learn the proper pronunciation for the ICAO-approved phonetic alphabet, be clear and loud when speaking over a radio system and know how close to be to the microphone to be heard and understood best by the listening party.

How To Memorize the NATO Phonetic Alphabet

Learning the ICAO-approved alphabet from Alfa to Zulu

Learning the NATO Phonetic Alphabet is important in many careers ranging from airline pilots to the military to police departments. This alphabet is approved by a number of organizations including NATO, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Telecommunication Union.

Knowing this internationally-approved alphabet can help people in their everyday life as well, from telling someone a postal code over the phone so the listener understands it correctly to having a fun way to communicate with friends and family.

Sometimes it is confused with the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is a globally accepted list of terms for how to sound out and pronounce words. This is different from the NATO Phonetic Alphabet, which provides a word for each letter in the alphabet so that it will be clear which letter you are talking about. For anyone who needs to learn this alphabet or is interested in studying it, here are some tips to help get it memorized.

Alfa/Alpha – Think alpha as in alphabet or remember that it is the first letter of the Greek alphabet.

Bravo – Say Bravo! on remembering the second word in this alphabet.

Charlie – C, as in I see (‘C’) you Charlie! It’s also the first of six names in this alphabet. They are Charlie, Juliet, Mike, Oscar, Romeo and Victor. Remember the names by using the acronym CJ MORV.

Delta – It’s the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. It’s the mouth of the river and one of two geographical terms in this alphabet. D for Delta and S for Sierra.

Echo – Let the NATO phonetic alphabet echo in one’s mind. Echo echo echo….

Foxtrot – Don’t be outfoxed by the letter F. Remember that there are two dances in this alphabet. The Foxtrot and the Tango.

Gulf, Hotel, India – Remember these three words as a group in the following sentence: Go to the Gulf Hotel in India.

Juliet/Juliett – remember there is love in this alphabet. First find Juliet and later search for her Romeo hiding out near Quebec.

Kilo, Lima – Remember the sentence: I found a kilo of lima beans in Lima, Peru. Or instead of a kilometre, it’s a kilolima! (Reminder, Lima is pronounced ‘LEE-Ma,’ as in ‘Lima, Peru,’ NOT with the ‘LIE’ sound found in ‘lima beans.’)

Mike – It’s not Malcolm in the Middle, in this alphabet it’s Mike in the middle. Or remember a famous Mike like Mike Tyson or Michael J Fox. Most people know someone with this name, so they can always remember a Mike closer to home. It’s also helpful to remember that the words for K,L and M are all only four letters long.

November – It’s the only month in this alphabet and the only month that rhymes with remember. So remember November.

Oscar – Think of being an Oscar winner. Remember Oscar and be a winner.

Papa – Where’s your mama? Not here in this alphabet, we only have a papa!

Quebec – The only Canadian province in the alphabet, and the only Canadian province where French is number one.

Romeo – Juliet will find her Romeo near Quebec.

Sierra – It might seem like an uphill battle, but this word relates to a mountain range. It’s the last geographical term, and it’s all downhill from here.

Tango – Remember this is the last dance in this alphabet.

Uniform – Remember pilots and police officers have to wear a uniform.

Victor – Victor is the last man standing in this alphabet. Here it is V for Victory, just without the Y!

Whiskey – It’s the only strong drink to be found in this alphabet. Whisk away the whiskey!

X-ray – X doesn’t mark the spot, unless it’s found on a chart during an X-ray!

Yankee – Don’t yank your hair out for this one. ..yank on to Yankee.

Zulu – This alphabet comes to a strong finish, think of Shaka Zulu bringing together many kingdoms.

Remember to Study

These memory aids are a great way to learn the NATO Phonetic Alphabet by heart. Learning how to pronounce and spell the ICAO-approved Phonetic Alphabet is also helpful. A good idea is to study these words, and then try to write out the words for each letter, without looking at the list. Practice saying the alphabet aloud and see how many can be remembered. Another idea is to get flashcards and put the word on one side and the question or clue on the other side to help memorize the words. One could also study the terms with someone else, so that quizzing is possible.
